Wow!! Today we saw a spectacular launch and EFT-1 mission. Orion traveled 3,600 miles above the Earth, withstood temperatures of 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit and travelled nearly 60,000 miles - twice through the Van Allen belt's radiation-- during the two-orbit flight that was designed to test the systems critical to carrying astronauts on future missions.
Congratulations to the entire Orion team, including our parachute team (what a beautiful sight that was!) and those working in our mission control center today. At the moment, personnel from NASA, the U.S. Navy and Lockheed Martin aboard the USS Anchorage are in the process of recovering Orion and will return it to U.S. Naval Base San Diego in the coming days. The spacecraft will then be returned to KSC, followed by lots of post-flight analysis. Work has already begun on Exploration Mission-1, an uncrewed Orion/SLS mission with a circumlunar trajectory, scheduled for FY2018. As Charlie Bolden said in his note, we are on an unprecedented human Journey to Mars, and today we met the first big milestone.
Next week JSC will celebrate the many accomplishments our center has achieved this year, highlighted by today's mission, and I hope you will join me at JSCelebrates Dec. 12 in Building 9 from 4:30 to 7pm.
